Message from the AHA:

CPR and AED awareness has been heightened since Jan. 2 when Buffalo Bills player, Damar Hamlin, 24, suffered cardiac arrest during a Monday Night Football game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Millions watched with deep concern as first responders and team medical staff performed CPR on Hamlin and used a defibrillator. We salute the first responders and medical personnel who did an incredible job on providing prehospital care that helped save Hamlin’s life.

The AHA is grateful and encouraged to learn that Hamlin has made so much progress in his recovery and remains neurologically intact, acco

rding to a NFL report. He has been discharged from the hospital and will continue his rehabilitation at home. We wish him all the best as he continues to heal.

This recent event has thrust CPR into the national spotlight with much public interest in AHA’s CPR resources as well as CPR and AED training. Furthermore, it’s an important reminder of the valuable training that our Training Network provides. Your instruction and the skills that you teach matters and saves lives. This moment also serves as an educational opportunity to reinforce some of the principles of high-quality, Basic Life Support care, which Hamlin received. We encourage you to read an AHA Instructor Community article that covers these principles that was written by Joshua A. Worth, Sr, an AHA BLS Instructor who also serves as Chief of Operations at Medical Rescue Team South Authority in Pittsburgh.

We thank you for all that you do in support of our lifesaving mission.
